Benefits of Collaborating with NPDP Certified Individuals

New Product Development Professional (NPDP) certification from the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) formally recognizes knowledge, education, and experience in new product or service development. Currently, the NPDP certification has been awarded to several thousand professionals worldwide. Of these, a small percentage focus on technology products.

To pass the NPDP certification exam, candidates must show their mastery of the following areas:

  • Strategy
  • Portfolio Management
  • New Products Process
  • Tools & Metrics
  • Market Research
  • Teams, People & Organizational Issues

These topics require knowledge from disciplines such as engineering, marketing, business, product management, and sales as well as executive management. There is a bit of overlap with content from many MBA programs.

About 20 professional development hours per year are required for an individual to maintain certification. This encourages individuals to explore emerging trends in new product development. An NPDP certified individual's broad experience comes not just from the best practices of one or two companies but an appreciation of what separates the "best" from the "rest."

Like other certified professionals (such as CPAs or surgeons), current certification provides additional credibility that your partner insists on high professional standards, excellence, and best practices.
